As cross-border commerce accelerates across Europe, Southeast Europe and the Balkans are rapidly emerging as strategic growth markets for digital businesses. The Balkan eCommerce Summit has become a key meeting point for founders, technology providers and decision-makers looking to expand beyond their domestic markets.

In this interview, Nikola Ilchev, founder of the Balkan eCommerce Summit, shares the story behind the event, the thinking that shaped its growth, and why the 2026 edition is positioned as a must-attend platform for companies focused on international expansion and digital transformation.

Nikola Ilchev, you’ve been building events in the eCommerce space for years, with Balkan eCommerce Summit growing significantly since 2023. What personally drives you, and when did you realise the region needed its own dedicated eCommerce summit?

The roots of the Summit go back to 2016, when we organised our first cross-border event, Sell Successfully in Romania. It was a small event, with around 60 attendees from Bulgaria and only a handful of Romanian experts sharing practical insights about their market.

A month later, I personally called every attendee to see whether the event had actually helped them. To my surprise, more than 40 of them were already taking their first steps into the Romanian market, applying what they had learned. That was the moment I realised the region needed a dedicated international platform—one that helps local eCommerce players expand beyond their borders.

It took time to build credibility and find the right format, but those early lessons shaped the foundation of the Summit. Its growth comes from two directions: internally, our commitment to real value and community; and externally, the rapid rise of online sales and ongoing digital transformation across the region.

In one line, what’s the idea behind “Your Next Market” as the theme for Balkan eCommerce Summit 2026?

The idea behind “Your Next Market” comes from countless conversations I’ve had with eCommerce founders, service providers and event organisers across the region. Cross-border commerce keeps coming up—it’s becoming the main growth driver, not only in the Balkans but globally.

We wanted a theme that’s simple, direct and memorable. “Your Next Market” says exactly what we stand for: helping businesses identify and enter their next opportunity beyond borders.

Which three outcomes should an attendee expect after two days at Balkan eCommerce Summit 2026?

After two days at BES 2026, every attendee should leave with a clear understanding of the latest eCommerce trends—from automation and marketing to SEO and GEO—and how they apply across different Balkan markets.

Secondly, they should gain a strong network of service providers and partners who can support their growth. And finally, they should walk away with fresh, actionable ideas for products, strategies and business development that they can implement immediately.

How do you select international experts to ensure actionable insights rather than high-level theory?

We are very selective about who takes the stage. Every speaker is either personally invited by our team based on proven hands-on experience, or selected through an application process that requires clear evidence of real-world results.

We also look for speakers who can communicate in an engaging and inspiring way, because great content only matters if it truly connects with the audience.

A strong example is our sessions featuring successful eCommerce brand owners, often paired with a service provider or partner who helped them achieve those results—giving attendees a complete, practical perspective.

For the One-to-One Meeting Zone, how do you balance volume with relevance?

The balance happens naturally through the quality of attendees we bring together. When the right people are in the room—serious professionals who value their time—no-shows are rare.

Meetings are managed via our event app, which handles scheduling and capacity. Even if a meeting isn’t a perfect fit, it’s still valuable, because everyone attending operates within the eCommerce ecosystem. If demand increases, we simply expand the zone.

How should first-time attendees from Western Europe prepare for Balkan eCommerce Summit 2026?

They should expect intense—but warm and welcoming—networking.

I recommend reviewing the partner list in advance and identifying companies they want to meet. Conversations are fast, open and direct. Business culture in the Balkans is personal and trust-based, which creates a unique and highly energetic networking environment.

Tell us about the Partner Promotion Kit. How does it help sponsors and exhibitors maximise their presence?

Our “Event Preparation Guidelines” book was created to help every partner get real value from their participation.

It covers what to do before, during and after the event—from communication strategies and booth preparation to content creation, attendee engagement and proven follow-up tactics. Our goal is simple: for the Summit to succeed, every exhibitor, partner and attendee must succeed as well.

How do Brand Ambassadors contribute to the Balkan eCommerce Summit 2026 community?

Our Brand Ambassadors are one of our strongest assets. They are respected professionals from digital marketing, eCommerce, logistics, content creation and the startup ecosystem.

Their credibility strengthens the Summit’s reputation, and their authentic communication builds trust naturally. We truly value their contribution and consider them an essential part of our community.

The Balkan Party has become iconic. Can you share any hints about what’s planned for 2026?

What I can say is that it will be a bigger and better version of everything people have enjoyed so far.

The same incredible energy—taken to the next level. Some elements will remain a surprise for now.
